Philipp Rosendahl, born in Düsseldorf (Germany) in 1990, has distinguished himself as one of the most promising cross over theatre directors of his generation.
Philipp has been committed to becoming a stage-director from a very early age, yet he first moved to New York City at the age of 19 to pursue acting studies. He directed his debut-production at the age of 20 while still studying.
After successfully completing his degree he was immediately offered a position as directors' assistant at the Kassel State Theatre in Germany. This appointment very quickly led to an unprecedentedly quick rise to public attention, as he was very soon commissioned to direct his own productions at the theatre. In those years, he has directed some of their most successful productions: Tschick, Jelinek's The Suppliants, Schiller's The Robbers, the adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's Ronia the Robbers' Daughter and his first mini-opera Tom Sawyer. In 2016 he was appointed “House Director” and Director of the Youth Department of the Kassel State Theatre and simultaneously won the “Special Young Talent Award” of the Kassel State Theatre Society for his “exceptional achievements”.
In 2018 he made his opera debut with Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story and adapted and directed Aldous Huxley's Brave new World for the Stuttgart State Theatre. In September 2019 he opened Kassel's theatre season with As you like it by William Shakespeare and the Mannheim National Theatre's season with Oresteia by Aeschylus. This was followed by a new production of Bernstein's Candide at the Kassel opera house in January 2020.
In October 2022 his new production of the Broadway musical Next to Normal opened in Kassel.
Starting in the 22/23 season Philipp is currently part of the artistic direction team at the Cottbus State Theatre where he directed Romeo and Juliet, The great Gatsby and Equus by Peter Shaffer. Works at Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and Göteborgsoperan will follow.
